Art from Inside
Current and prior inmates of NSW Correctional Centres will have an opportunity to showcase their creative talents in an art competition sponsored by Prison Fellowship Australia. They have sought the best in Painting, Drawing and Applied Arts, PF Australia is encouraging inmates and ex-inmates to illustrate the theme of this year’s contest, “Lord, Remember Me”.
Submissions to the competition are to be judged on both the quality of the art and its representation of the theme. The top three pieces from each category are selected for submission to the national exhibition. The judges’ selections will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at 3pm in the Margot Hardy Gallery on Saturday 12 June. The NSW exhibition closes Fri 2 July, after which the top selected works will move to Melbourne for the National exhibition.
"This is a great opportunity to show the human side of prisons, and the work done in the rehabilitation programs through Art. Creativity is a powerful tool in aiding the prisoners to process those feelings and emotions that are often hard to express or put into words, as well as being a positive and skill building recreational activity. I hope that the community will take the time to visit the exhibition and see this as an opportunity to have perceptions challenged and changed. I’m excited to be involved in even a small way in the ongoing and expansive work of Prison Fellowship.”
Prison Fellowship NSW/ACT is a state and territory branch of Prison Fellowship Australia, a chartered ministry of Prison Fellowship International, a network of more than one hundred affiliated national ministries committed to serving inmates, ex-inmates, victims of crimes and families affected by crime.
