Puning is a country-level city within the municipal region of Jieyang, southeast Guangdong Province, China. During October 2017 artists and photographers, mostly connected via varying degrees of interest, research and/or teaching with Western Sydney University travelled to Puning from Shenzen within Guangdong Province supported by China-Australia Cultural and Creative Industries and 51A Art Space, Shenzen PR China.
Wiithin Puning city, you can find the original town and within that remnants of the first village, six hundred years old, and inhabited still. Here is traditional industry, making stocks of the largest incense sticks; piles of handmade noodles along side concrete trucks rebuilding sections of the old village.
The artist's, Dr David Cubby, Dawne Fahey, Michaela Gamble and Enrico Scotece within this exhibition document familar narratives that they also share with their subjects, having also grown up in villages and urban areas, that have also been industralised and modernised.
