Someone Has To Draw The Lines
Gordon Waters' work explores the spatial potential of abstract painting using layering of the painted surface, stencils and glazes. Within these layers are indirect references to landscape, as well as components of design such as architectural and mosaic motifs and calligraphic lettering.
His recent work explores two aspects of non-objective picture making which have preoccupied him for the last 15 years: these being the relationship between the automatic, instinctive mark and that which is more considered.
While the pictorial concerns remain the same – representing layers of depth through glazes and scumbling, strong tonal relationships, manipulation of the picture plane – the articulation of those concerns has shifted slightly.
This can be seen in the line works. These works (Someone has to draw the line etc.) are an attempt to investigate the idea of controlling is a random line. Much the way organised chaos works with fractals in nature. While these works have an initial geometric appearance, it is the organic nature of the line, the regimented mistakes, which interests this artist.
Gordon Waters has been exhibiting in Australia and overseas for over 25 years. His work is held in many private and public collections including the Australian Print Workshop, Chang Mai University, University of Wisconsin, Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, South Bank Institute, Southern Graphics Council, University of Mississippi, University of West England, National Gallery of Australia, University of Western Sydney, and St. Vincent's Hospital.
