Divergence
"'The peculiarity of the printmakers' process is the intervention of a mechanical process which, no matter how perfectly mastered, has its own specific properties...For many printmakers it is this tension between certainty and uncertainty, the predictable and the chance effect introduced within the technical process, which gives the printmaking techniques their most engaging quality." Sasha Grishin, (1997:p 5) Australian Printmaking in the 1990s.
The diversity of the 'art of printmaking' was self evident within the exhibition 'Divergence'. This small collection of works was generated from the University's own art collection, which has consistently collected print media artists from the 1970s, up to the present day.
During the mid 1990s, the University hosted the Australian Print Media Awards in conjunction with Casula Powerhouse in order to further develop its national print media collection. The works acquired by the University, reflect that printmaking has always been an art form which has employed the most recent technology, whether it be the printing press, lithography, photographic or digital processes.
