University Art Collection Virtual Tour

The Western Sydney University Art Collection of approximately 1,400 objects was formed from the holdings of its former network members, Hawkesbury, Macarthur and Nepean. It comprises of a diverse range of paintings, works on paper, photographs, mixed media sculptures and ceramics, which are primarily Australian artists from the 20th and 21st Century. Past and present staff and students are also represented within the collection, as well as local artists from the Hawkesbury, Macarthur and Nepean regions of Greater Western Sydney. The art collection is on public display throughout the extensive grounds and buildings located on six campuses throughout Western Sydney, these being located at Bankstown, Nirimba (Blacktown), Campbelltown, Parramatta, Penrith and Hawkesbury.

 

Objectives of the Western Sydney University Art Collection

  • To enhance the educational, cultural and everyday experiences of students, staff and visitors to Western Sydney University
  • To be a teaching, learning and research resource demonstrating contemporary Australian art practices
  • To promote internationally, nationally and regionally the art collection of a significant social and cultural resource which is engaged with the community within the Greater Western Sydney

 

Strengths of the Western Sydney University Art Collection

  • 20th and 21st Century Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists
  • 20th and 21st Century Australian Printmedia Artists and Painters
  • 21st Century Australian Sculptors
  • International Artists who have participated in artist residency programs at the University

 

Role of the Western Sydney University Curator

The Western Sydney University Curator is responsible for the development, management, exhibition and conservation of the Western Sydney University Art Collection. The Curator is also the artistic director for all exhibition programs in the following Western Sydney University galleries; Female Orphan School Gallery (Parramatta Campus), Margot Hardy Gallery (Bankstown Campus) and the University Art Gallery (Werrington North, Penrith Campus) as well as for the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Exhibition (biannual outdoor exhibition held on Campbelltown Campus).
